About Space Heaters

Mall space heaters are normally used when the main heating system is not quite enough or when central heating is too costly. If you have a room that just doesn't seem to stay warm on some of winter's colder nights this device will help. Some units may or may not save you money depending on how you use them and what type of heater you buy. If you are using it to help heat a room where there isn't enough heat coming from the vents from your furnace and want to keep that particular room warmer it is ideal. If you need to put one in each room in your home you need to look into buying a heat pump or central heating. Space heaters are normally judged or bought by how many BTUs (British Thermal Units) They normally have a range starting from 10,000 Btu's to maxing out right around 40,000 BTUs. With the lesser Btu's being the least expensive.

There are several types of units that you can buy. Convection space heaters generate heat like an electric range does. This heat energy is then distributed through the room through convection, along with conduction and forced air. This is great for a room that needs a quiet and economical heat source. These units do not heat a room quite as quickly as some of the other types of units but will sustain their heat for a long period.
Fan Forced Convection Heating types of units are similar to the convection type however they have a fan to gently push out the heat, they are a bit noisier than regular convection, however can heat a room quicker because of the fan. This is the most popular style of heater that is sold today. It can be carried from room to room and are normally very portable.
Oil-filled heaters come in two different types active and passive. Passive forms of oil heaters are the most common. They look like the old radiators found in older homes and apartment buildings. They work by heating an element at the bottom of the heater which warms the oil, as it circulates through the heater. Passive radiator-style heaters give off a consistent even heat and are very quiet.

The problem with this type of unit is that you need to be close to the unit to feel the heater working. Active forms of oil heaters run the same way as the passive radiant type however instead of relying on the heat to slowly radiate out from the oil heater, it uses a blower to push heat out from the heater. The fan blows air across the pipes that contain the heated oil. This heats the room more quickly and evenly, even though you can't feel the same type of heat as the conventional type of heaters. They are economical, in the fact that they rely on energy to heat their internal oil, then once warm, they can use the warm oil to continue to heat the room.

Radiant Space Heaters are fast and quick to heat. As soon as they are turned on, they immediately radiate heat to whatever is within their path. They are not normally used for heating an entire room, as they heat objects rather than the air. Many radiant heaters also go by different names; ceramic, infrared, quartz & halogen light space heaters are all types of radiant space heaters. These units can be easily moved from place to place.

The United States Department of Energy recommends these precautions when using a space heater."Only purchase newer model heaters that have all of the current safety features. Make sure the heater has the Underwriter's Laboratory (UL) label attached to it. Choose a thermostatically controlled heater, since they avoid the energy waste of overheating a room. Select a heater of the proper size for the room you wish to heat. Do not purchase oversized heaters. Most heaters come with a general sizing table. Locate the heater on a level surface away from foot traffic. Be especially careful to keep children and pets away from the heater."

Using electric space heaters is normally more expensive to operate than combustion space heater types. They do not have the Btu's that a combustion heater offers either. However, they offer more value because they do not have to be vented outside and do not have to be refueled. When buying and installing any type of heater, you should follow these general safety guidelines: Electric heaters should be plugged directly into the wall outlet. When using an extension cord be sure it is the heavy-duty type of cord that has at least 14-gauge wire or better.

For portable electric heaters, buy a unit with a tip-over safety switch, which automatically shuts off the heater if the unit is tipped over. This is an awesome feature so be sure to check the product's labeling to be sure your unit has this feature.
